Assessment

At Light Years School, assessment is at the heart of how we support every child to succeed. We take a careful and responsive approach, starting with a clear baseline when each pupil joins us so we can fully understand their strengths, needs and next steps.

We use a range of recognised assessment tools, including Read Write Inc. phonics and the Hampshire Assessment Model for Maths and Literacy. These help us break learning down into small, manageable steps and identify exactly where each child is in their learning journey. We also use online platforms such as maths.co.uk and spag.com to support our ongoing understanding of progress.

Alongside academic assessment, we place a strong emphasis on the whole child. Where appropriate, we gather additional information through therapeutic approaches such as Thrive, ELSA and Lego Therapy, as well as advice and assessments from Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) and Occupational Therapy (OT). This ensures that we are supporting both learning and wellbeing.

Assessment is continuous and informs everything we do in the classroom. Teachers regularly check understanding through retrieval practice, discussion and daily work, allowing them to adapt teaching and provide targeted support quickly. Children are encouraged to reflect on their learning through ‘purple pen’ responses and verbal feedback, helping them to build independence and confidence.

Pupil voice is a key part of our approach. Through regular pupil conferencing, we talk with children about their learning, what helps them, and how they feel about their progress. This helps us to ensure learning is meaningful, motivating and well understood.

We use detailed gap analysis from the Hampshire Assessment Model to plan next steps, ensuring teaching is precisely matched to each child’s needs both in the moment and over time.

The Senior Leadership Team regularly monitors progress across the school, including the impact of therapeutic support and interventions. All assessment information is used to adapt teaching and ensure strong outcomes for every pupil. We share progress clearly and regularly with parents and carers so that you feel fully informed and part of your child’s learning journey.
