Multi Sensory
At Light Years School, our multi-sensory approach is a defining strength of our provision and is embedded across every aspect of school life. It sets us apart and underpins how we enable all pupils to access, engage with and succeed in their learning.
Multi-sensory teaching means that children learn through a combination of visual, auditory, kinaesthetic and tactile experiences. Research consistently shows that learning is stronger when pupils are actively engaged through multiple pathways, as this supports memory, understanding and the ability to transfer skills over time. This approach is particularly effective for pupils with special educational needs, as it removes barriers and ensures that learning is accessible, meaningful and inclusive.
At Light Years, this is not an ‘add-on’ -it is our everyday practice. Every lesson is carefully designed to include opportunities for pupils to see, hear, say and do. Teachers use concrete resources, visuals, movement, structured talk and hands-on experiences to bring learning to life and support deep understanding. This consistent approach across the school ensures that pupils feel confident, know what to expect and are able to build on prior learning effectively.
We have worked in partnership with leading multi-sensory expert Dr Susie Nyman to develop and refine our approach. Through this collaboration, our staff are highly skilled in delivering evidence-informed teaching strategies that meet the diverse needs of our learners. Ongoing training and coaching ensure that high-quality multi-sensory teaching is sustained and continually developed.
Our commitment extends beyond the classroom. We provide carefully planned opportunities for sensory exploration throughout the school day, including a dedicated multi-sensory tuff tray available during outdoor and break times. These activities, often planned by our Thrive practitioners, support regulation, creativity and engagement, ensuring pupils are ready to learn.
The impact of this approach is clear: pupils are engaged, motivated and able to access learning in ways that work for them. They develop stronger understanding, increased independence and a positive attitude towards learning.
At Light Years School, multi-sensory learning is not just a strategy—it is a fundamental part of who we are. It reflects our commitment to research-informed practice and ensures that every child is supported to thrive.
Our Tuff Trays
Multi-sensory activities are available daily at break and lunchtimes. These are designed and created by Carrie-Ann, a member of the Inclusion Practitioner team. The pupils love to access these!
